The morning of June 23rd, 2010 saw the inaugurating conference of the National Strategic Alliance on the Innovation of Strategic Alliance on Technical Innovation of Cleaner Production and Recycling Utilization of Aluminum held at Shenyang Friendship Hotel. Over 60 participants from 30 enterprises, universities, scientific research & design organizations of China’s alumina industry attended the conference.

To ensure the sustainable development of China’s aluminium industry, technical innovations have been carrying out focusing on 5 aspects including development and application & industrialization demonstration of key technologies for safe aluminium resource supply strategy, development and industrial application of technologies for efficient use and recycling use of aluminium resources, development and industrial application of technologies for improving alumina quality, development and industrialization demonstration of secondary aluminium technologies and development of key technologies of proper use of the overseas bauxite resources (including aluminium scrap).

These technical innovations mainly include original innovations and integrated innovations, with re-innovation based on imported technologies as subsidiary. This practice is the inevitable choice that will ensure the strategic safety of aluminium resource supply, help to realize the objectives of energy saving and emission reduction, and greatly enhance the competitive edge of China’s aluminium industry. While this is also what the foundation of the strategic alliance meant. After several preparatory meetings held among relevant companies, including NEUI and Luneng Jinbei Aluminium Co., Ltd, etc, the conference was finally successfully held with the strong support of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association and the Northeastern University.

The tenet and constitution of the alliance, etc. were passed, and the first chairman, vice chairman and the directors of the council were elected. The members of the first technical commission, as well as the secretariat of the council were selected. In addition, the recent keystones of near future were discussed and determined. The chairman of Luneng Jinbei Aluminium Co., Ltd, Mr. Xu Qingluan was elected the first chairman of the alliance council. And the chairman of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, Mr. Kang Yi attended the conference and made an important speech.

The alliance will fully exert the advantages of all parties, especially the science & technology advantages, strengthen the teaching –technical R&D – industry collaboration, jointly be committed to the innovation & development of key technologies on solving the problem of severe lack of aluminium resource in China, exploiting huge potentials on the energy saving, consumption & emission reduction for alumina production, improving the quality of sandy alumina, and clean production of secondary aluminium production, etc., as well as their application in the aluminium industry. Thus, the core competitive edge of China’s aluminium industry will be enhanced. The conference highlights the role of NEUI in the aluminium industry and will pave the way for the future development.
